Hea on, kui vahel sajab vihma, moos podiseb pliidil, toad on juba korras ja lapsed on naabrite juures, siis saab vanu võlgu likvideerida. Selle mütsi õpetust olen ma juba ammu lubanud nii siia kui sinna. Ja leidsin selle aja, et üles kirjutada viimaks ometi selle kaabu retsept. Siin on inglisekeelne juhend.

When it's a rainy day, the house is clean (somewhat), the "marmellata" is slowly boiling and kids are at the neighbors', then I am able to sit down and fill my promises.  This hat has waited it's pattern for the longest time. But it's here now.

Võtame järele / Catching up

Oh issuke, kui palju vett on vahepeal mere voolanud. Pikk blogimisepaus on tingitud tegelikult sellest, et me pere pisim pätt valas mu arvutisse pudelitäie vett ja kaks kuud olen ma ilma pidnud hakkama saama. Rääkimata sellest, et Omaani puhkuse ajal pani ka mu fotoaparaat pildi taskusse ( ning sellest, et ämma-äia kuuajase külaskäigu raames kadus ka mul igasugune huvi ükskõik millise käistöölise tegevuse vastu. Nüüd on mul uus arvuti (ja sellega seoses väga tühi rahakott), fotokas tuli parandusest tagasi ning ämm ja äi lendasid nädala alguses oma koju tagasi.

Oh dear, how time has flown by! My long absence from blogosphere has been due to the parting of my computer after it got a nice shower from the able hands of my younger daughter. It has been two months without my laptop. Not to mention, that my camera refused to work ever since our holiday to Oman, and  also because my in-laws visit didn't allow me any time for crafting. Now I have a new laptop and  the camera got back from repairs as good as new. And my in-laws left this week  too. So now I'm back with my hands itching for new projects. 

Vahepeal kudusin ma valmis ainult 18 mütsikest liiga varakult ilmaletulnud beebsude jaoks. Kokku saime me neid oma kudugrupiga 59 valmis ning kuuldavasti on mõned veel minu kätte jõudmata. Aga ma loodan, et need ka varsti me kingikotti saabuvad, et saaks mütsid lõpuks ometi haiglasse ära viia.

The only project I was able to work on during these 2 months of procrastination was the charity knitting UAE Amiras (that is our knitting community) were doing - we made Eenie, Meenie, Minie, Moe hats for the local hospital. I made 18, in total we got 59, that is 9 more than we projected. Some may be loose around town just yet, but I'm hoping those will find their way to me soon too, so we can drop off the hats in the Corniche hospital as soon as possible. 

Lõngaks paluti meilt akrüüli ja/või puuvillast, ja kuigi ma kumbagi ei armast, eriti seda naftasaadust, siis hea eesmärgi nimel võib ka mõnest asjaolust mitte suurt numbrit teha. Selliste pisikeste mütside kudumine võtab vähe aega ja vaeva, aga võib mõnele kudujale raske olla - pildid väiksetest nääpsudest kuvöösis on emotsionaalselt väga rasked. Mina püüdsin kudumise ajal meeles pidada, kui palju abi ja rõõmu võib olla mõnele nääpsule ja tema vanematele ühest ainsast mütsist. Ka kõige pisemate mütside (mis passivad väiksemat mõõtu munale pähe) kudumise ajal proovisin hoopiski mõelda sellele, et kaetud peaga pisike lahkuja või oma elu eest pidevalt võitleva mikrobeebi emal ja isal oleks natukenegi tröösti teades, et mütsiga tulevad kaasa head soovid.

The hats are knit in acrylics and cottons, and though I do not like neither of these fibers particularly, I managed to overcome my reluctance because of the good cause. Knitting these little hats takes little time and effort, but may be very difficult to some knitters - inevitably one may start thinking of the condition the babies are in when born early. I tried hard to remember throughout the knitting process that these hats may bring a lot of relief to preemies and joy to their parents and even when I was knitting the tiniest ones (that barely fit an egg) I found comfort in thinking the parents of the ones that are leaving us and the ones who are fighting hard for their survival not only get a hat but lots of good wishes knit into it.

Risti-rästi patentkoes / Crissed-crossed in Brioche stitch

Vahel ma koon ka midagi ka patentkoes. Enamasti lastele mütse, sest kuigi tulemus on mõnusalt pehme ja soe, siis annab patentkude kõvasti volüümi juurde. Sügisest Vogue Knitting'u numbris aga leidsin põneva viisi, kuidas saab patentkoes palmikuid kududa. Kohe hakkasid näpud sügelema. Lõngavarudes leidub alati vajalikku ja kahe õhtuga oli müts valmis kootud. AGA küll see tuli suur. Sama tulise jutiga, millega sai kootus, harutasin ka töö lahti ja võtsin väiksemad kudumispulgad. Sedasi kaks korda kududes sain risti-rästi tulpade hingeeluga päris hästi tuttavaks ja võimalik, et taolises stiilis töid tuleb tulevikuski. Kui nüüd Jõulud Eestis tuleks ak piisavalt külmad ja lumerohked, et seda mütsi ka kanda saaks...

Sometimes I knit things in brioche stitch. Usually children's hats, but I must admit it is not my favourite stitch combination because the fabric properties that tend to add to the volume of the knit. In the Fall issue of Vogue Knitting I got hooked. They had an extensive article on cabling in brioche stitch. I was intrigued and cast on straight away. In two nights I had the first hat, but it came out enormous. So I frogged my work and went down on needle size. The second one came out way better, thanks to knitting the hat twice I got to know the secrets of brioche cabling quite well, I will probably use this technique again quite soon. If only Christmas in Estonia would be white and cold, so I could actually wear this hat!

Ma pole kaua tikkinud. Viimati tikkisin põlle ja enne seda jäävad mu sellealased katsetused eel-teismelise ikka, kui ristpistes linikuid ja töid kukkus nõelalt mitmeid.

I haven't embroidered for a long time. The last work of the sort was the hip-apron back in 2008 and before that I'd have to go back years into preadolescence when I used to whip up cross-stitch items of all sorts.

Singapuris leidsin ühe armsa linnulõike ja võtsin tikkimise taas käsile. Aga, nagu ikka, kui on tegu selliste komplektidega, siis jääb puudu tikkimisniidist. Kontrollisin kogu mustrijuhise üle, et ega ma pole valesti aru saanud, aga ei. Puudu jääb helesinisest värvist ligi veerand.

While vacationing in Singapore, I came across a bird design that was soooo cute that I decided to have a go at stitching with a needle. It was very nice until I noticed that the kit contains less light-blue thread than necessary for completion. It was clear that there was at least a quarter amount less than needed.

Kus häda kõige suurem, seal abi kõige lähem. Mõtelsin, et kuna ta nagunii mustrikohane ei tule, sest ma ei viitsi tikkimisniite juurde minna ostma ja tea, aks neid samu värve siit saabki, siis teen omaloomingut ja harjutan erinevaid pisteid ka. Nii ta siis praegu töö käigus kujuneb.

This put me back a little. While trying to come up with a solution, and going shopping isn't one in my mind since I have no idea where I could find DMC threads in Abu Dhabi, I thought why not have a go with other stitches and practice a little. So I started stitching the wings differently and am liking the result so much that I am considering of expanding my stitch practice to other areas as well.

Ülejäägid kasutusse / Leftovers

Eteim viis kasutada ära väikeseid koguseid imepehmet lõnga on teha beebiasju. Viimatisest sallist järelejäänud 40 grammi kasutasin beebi mütsi ja papude jaoks - ka siinses palavas kliimas kulub mõni soojem jäseme kate ära, eriti kui sisetemperatuurid võivad vabalt alla 20 kraadi olla. Kahjuks ei õnnestunud kulutada ära kogu ülejääki, peale nelja papu ja ühe mütsi kudumist jagunuks veel üheks paariks varbasoojendajateks, aga noh olgu sellega kuidas on.
Lõngaks Grignasco Mousse (milles 50% sojat, 40% tallevilla ja 10% siidi; meetreid 185), varras 3 mm, muster täitsa enese aruga. Ja meeldetuletuseks, et mälu ei ole piisav argument loomaks üles 48 cm jagu silmuseid peakattele, kui tegelikult sünnivad lapsed vähemalt 10 cm väiksemate peadega. See tähendab ainult seda, et kõik tuleb uuesti kududa.

Easiest way to use up small quantities of leftover yarn is to make some baby items - bootees, tiny newborn hats, thumbless mitts etc. From the latest scarf I had some 40 grams left over so I knit up a hat and booties. Even in the hot and humid air of Singapore we need to cover up - when entering indoors!
Yarn is Grinasco Mousse (50% soya, 40% lambs wool and 10% silk; meterage 185), I used 3mm needles.

Karamell / Lollipop

Paari viimase aasta jooksul olen teinud päris mitu asja puuvillasest lõngast, kuigi ma seda materjali eriti ei armasta, ja loomulikult on ülejäägid pisikeste pallidena karpi kogutud. Karp käib nagu kogu muu varu voodi sees, aga... kuna nüüd tuleb nädala pärast taas uut lõnga meerikamaalt, siis on vaja ruumi teha ja endale ausalt tunnistada, et ega minust mingit Prudence Mapstone'i vabaheegelduse vallas ei saa ja leida neile alles hoitud lõngajuppidele muu rakendus. Ja 4mm heegelnõela abiga sai eile õhtul valmis karamellvärvides suvine mütsike:

I've made quite a few cotton items in the past few years (you might remember this, these and these) and I've had a shoe box full of scrap yarns (maybe 30-40 grams each ball). Until a few months ago I've deceived myself constantly thinking that one day I would be the new Prudence Mapstone with my creations in freeform crochet, but at this moment I need space and I need it fast (yep, I have a new order arriving from the other side of the ocean) so I had no other option but to use the scraps as fast as possible, empty the box and therefor make some space in the bed, and since the summer vacation is quite near, a new summer hat was in order. Of course for my daughter who has been bugging me quite awhile with requests on knitted garments.
Armed with 4 mm crochet hook and scraps I started working in single crochets and finished yesterday with this:

Kasutasin kolme erinevat lõnga, kuues erinevas värvistoonis:
Katia Jamaica nr. 4002 (beež, roheline, punane, oranž) ja 4003 (türkiissinine, roosa, beež, oranž)
Ornaghi Filati Alicante nr. 65 (rohelised) ja 62 (roosad)
GB Wolle Mosaik roosas ja lillas variandis.
Algul tegin nagu servata mütsi ikka ja alles lõpus heegeldasin laia ääre külge.

It has 3 different yarns in 6 different colourways:
Katia Jamaica in 4002 (beige, green, red) and 4003 (blue, pink, beige
Ornaghi Filati Alicante in 65 (greens) and 62 (pinks)
GB Wolle Mosaik in pink and lilac.
I started it like a beanie and later I crocheted the brim.

Tundub, et meeldib. Ja lõnga jagub veel teisegi jaoks.

She seems to be very happy with it. I have enough to make a second one ;)

Hat attack

Hat attack was fun, but a big waste of money on postage costs. I won't participate again, even though I enjoyed it quite a lot - at least enough to stay up until 2 am in the morning to finish the hat.
So without further a do here is my hat for Tanya from Texas

Remember yesterday's post?
Well I finished the hat and ripped the mitt. Hat with a wide brim this time, I used the white merino wool from Puglia I made the Inspiration aka first BSJ with, and leftover yarn from mitts. Designing this I had a very clear idea of what I wanted - a strong, big folding brim, two earthly colors and something my lovely grandmother in her 80+ years could wear daily yet provide a lady-like feel, something that she could wear with -20 degrees C and still have wide brim!

Knit and felted hat

For my mom I knit and then felted a hat in the style of 20ies-30ies, it is embellished with some crocheted flowers and buttons.

Yarn: unspun Estonian wool (carded only)

New old hat

Anke Leen has been going to school for nearly 3 months, and I made her a new set for the winter - neckpiece and a hat (no pictures :( ). On the second day at school with them she lost the set. Next day I sent her to school with last year's hat and collar. She came back hoem without them and we haven't been able to locate them at school. So I sent her to school with her father's hat (for I didn't have any other option) and she misplaced it by the end of the day, luckily we found it. Yesterday I sent her to school with the same hat telling her to put in her bag every time she wants to take it away. When I picked her up she had lost the hat somewhere and didn't remember where. We searched the school premises and finally found it at the playground. On the way home we got an idea to keep it as Anke Leen's hat for it really suits and fits her. But to make it more appealling to keep it safe and sound I took out some fancy yarn, crocheted the earflaps and edges, and made a pompom. I sent her to school woth the new hat she instantly was fond of. And now I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I knit the hat in Febryary this year in London from Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino (55% merino wool, 33% microfibre, 12% cashmere), yesterday's addition is Mondial Folk (100% acrylic). Cute!
